Big Game from Genii launched in May 2014. Thus, the game has a number of years on its neck, and in some aspects it is quite clear. In other aspects, Big Game works like any modern five-reel slot.

Big Game has a classic, no-frills game screen, and cartoonish animal symbols let you know you’re in the Savannah. The title brings to mind the much-demonized hunting of large land mammals, but let’s not get politically correct. What the game does feature, in addition to the cartoon animal symbols, are wilds, scatters, free spins, and multipliers.

About Big game slot

Big game from Genii offers the opportunity to visit the savannahs of Africa without stepping outside your door. In this five-reel slot, you will meet some of the typical mammals from the sun-drenched, vast expanses of the continent. You could say it welcomes you home to lions, rhinoceroses, elephants, leopards, and other animals that are in many ways "standard issue" for Africa. The game is quite reminiscent of such classics as Mega Moolah and Jungle Games but still possesses a certain something that makes it memorable in its own right.

The graphics of Big Game were excellent when the game was launched in May 2014. As you read this, you may feel that the graphics feel slightly less attractive. At the same time, it is not "ugly" in any way. In fact, we have to say that the game has a certain elegance. The game screen with the five reels as it were "floats" against a background showing a sunset over the Savannah. There is no framing wheel alignment and no demarcations between the wheels. This kind of minimalist wheels on̈ llning is a bit of a specialty from the game developer Genii and it is one in any case we like.

We do not find the sound as impressive. Genii has filled a background story with drums and various wind instruments (imagine The Lion King). The sound effects are few, and unfortunately they become tiresome very quickly—especially since every win (and there are lots of them) is accompanied by a disturbingly whimsical little tune with flutes.

Stakes and winnings

In the Big Game, you make your wagers across a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 30 lines that are arranged along five reels and three rows. When placing your bets, not only must you choose a coin value (either 0.10, 0.50, or 1$), you must also decide how many coins to place per line (1-15) and how many lines to use (1-30). Since adjusting the number of lines is unnecessary (you always use either the minimum or maximum number of lines), the focus should be on choosing the coin value and then using it to determine the level of your bets. The minimum bet is 3$; the maximum bet is 450$.

Victories are near the grand occasion. If you sample our preview version of the game, linked to in this review, you will discover this soon enough. While so many way wins seem to happen regularly, they also seem to be of low impact. For instance, three consecutive meerkat symbols award just 10% of the wager. There also seems to be some requirement that you string together at least four other high-value icons in order for wins to be worth talking about.

If you are fortunate and have the high-win symbols and jokers, the free spins round gives you the biggest wins. You can win a lot, with the possible maximum win being 270,000 coins. You win 3 times the amount with all the symbols, but if you win with the wild symbol, you get 2 times as much.

The return to player percentage for big games is unfortunately very low. Genii has actually not pushed it up higher than 94.70%. Fortunately, later creations from the game developer have a significantly higher payback.

Symbols

The lion and the elephant are the most prominent symbols on the reels. The lion, who rules the Savannah, is depicted as the joker/wild and the most sought-after symbol in the game. The elephant is a scatter and offers the player both a cash payout and a shot at Free Spins.

The other symbols on the reels are a rhinoceros, a hippopotamus, and a leopard. When it comes to the payout amounts for the symbols, this trio can be considered medium win symbols. The other paying part of the symbol gallery consists of a buffalo, a giraffe, a zebra, an ostrich, a hyena, a monkey, and a meerkat, which can all be said to offer low payout amounts.

Game features

Geniis Big Game is a video slot with no direct surprises. The special features are mostly the "old common" ones you find in many other slots. Yet, there's a small feature where you can win multipliers that makes this slot a bit more interesting.

Wilds

The main symbol in the gallery of symbols is the lion. This symbol has three jobs. First, The Lion is a jester. It trades places with all other symbols, except for one—elephants (the scatter symbol).

The second feature of the lion is that it is a multiplier. If it is included in a winning combination, just like in the wild, it will double the win on that particular line. Naturally, the Joker can appear on multiple paylines simultaneously. Lastly, the lion is a high-value symbol. If you get five lions on a payline, you'll net a windfall of 6000 coins.

Scatters and free spins

Two elephants on screen instantly pay you 2x your bet in cash. If, for instance, you choose to play at a stake of $4.50 per spin, and you happen to land two elephants, you would receive $9 instantly.

Do you receive three or more scatters instead? You win b on the free spins and a bigger cash win. The schedule of rewards looks as follows:

  • 3 scatter symbols = 5x total bet + 10 free spins
  • 20x the BET and 15 free spins are earned with 4 scatters.
  • Five scatter symbols result in 100 times the bet and 20 free spins.

Regardless of how many complimentary spins you receive, you will invariably enjoy the experience of playing your free spins with a multiplier of 3x. This was a setup that was very popular in the not-too-distant past—especially in slots from NetEnt—but is now, unfortunately, not so prevalent.

The free spins round overall multiplier can be combined with the lion's multiplier. So there is the opportunity for line wins to be multiplied by 6x. And free spins are definitely where the big wins can happen.

Summary

The online slot machine Big Game isn't what you'd call hyper-modern. And honestly, it's not the best paying slot machine either. Given those two aspects of the game, you might be inclined to think that its rating would be rather low.

That said, Big Game can be a lot of fun over the long haul—if, and this is a big if, the free spins round gets activated with some regularity. A huge slice of the total cashback is paid out in the free spins bonus round, with its multipliers. If the free spins are MIA, though, you can kinda guarantee that your game box is gonna drop in value, little by little and then all at once, over the not-so-distant horizon.
